You may hear the motor, but the food is still warm. Often it is dust on the coil at the back, the part that starts the motor, or gas that has escaped through a hole. We do not refill the gas until we have found where it is escaping.

Vegetables freeze on the bottom shelf or in the drawer. It is usually the thermostat, or, on a no-frost model, air that keeps circulating. That is a different job from a fridge that is not cooling at all.

A repeated click means the motor is trying to start and cannot. A continuous roar often comes from the freezer fan, when ice has caught the blades.

The small hole behind the vegetable drawer fills with debris and the water comes out at the front. It has nothing to do with the gas. We clear the channel. If the door seal does not close properly, the ice comes back after a few days.

On a no-frost fridge, ice builds up when the automatic defrost stops working and the air no longer circulates. On a model you defrost by hand, it is enough that the freezer door does not close properly. The ice thickens within a few days.

If the light works, power is reaching the fridge. The motor stays silent because of the start component, the thermostat, or the compressor itself. It is not the house fuse, if the rest of the kitchen is working.

The door seal splits or goes hard and lets warm air in. The fridge runs without stopping, ices up on the walls, and uses more electricity. We replace the seal at your home. The gas does not need to be touched.

Often it is standing water under the fridge, or mould in the folds of the seal. If the smell comes from food after a power cut, the appliance may be fine. We measure the temperature first, then decide whether any part is needed.
